Ski Vacations Colorado - The World's Favorite Ski Destination

By James Frith

After some of the best snowfall on record for the 2005 – 2006 ski season, the Colorado ski resorts are gearing up for what is shaping up to be another bumper year. With most resorts averaging well in excess of 300 inches of snowfall annually, there is never any shortage of that white fluffy stuff to make your next ski trip one to remember.

Unlike the West coast resorts where the snow is often heavy and wet, or the East coast ski hills where you are more likely to be sliding around on the ice, the Colorado resorts pride themselves on the Champagne powder that has made the state so famous worldwide. Destination skiers flock to Colorado from as far away as Australia, to experience it for themselves. Even Europeans see Colorado, not as an alternative to their own amazing Alpine destinations, but as a vaunted Mecca for guaranteed snow, world class ski areas, excellent facilities, unrivalled service, unparalleled accommodation choices and uncrowded slopes.

Colorado has a myriad of options and areas to explore. As far as lodging goes, there is everything from the high-end luxury "movie star" quality lodges and exclusive vacation homes to the everyday family condos and hotel rooms that are the staple of the resorts. Whether you are looking to relax in pampered luxury with your every whim catered to, just want to get away from the daily grind and relax with the family a million miles away from the everyday, "bunk up" with some College friends for a well earned Spring Break, or ski every run from first lift to last and bed down to do it all over again tomorrow, Colorado has the vacation accommodations for you.

The skiing (or riding) is vast and varied too. From the exclusive and immaculately groomed slopes of Beaver Creek Mountain (and don’t forget the "Birds of Prey" FIS World Cup Run), or the swank and elegance of Aspen – a Colorado tradition for years, to the "New" classics such as Telluride and Steamboat, there is something for everyone. The extreme skiers still flock to Crested Butte Resort (hard to get to, but harder still to leave behind!), those in the know still make sure to visit Vail (North America’s #1 ranked ski resort), and just across the pass and only a short 1 hour drive west of Denver you have the skiers paradise that is Summit County. Located high on the edge of the continental divide, Summit County has been attracting skiers since the early 70’s. With 4 major ski resorts within a 20 minute drive (Breckenridge, Keystone, Copper Mountain and A-Basin) it is the perfect family destination. Add to that the local towns of Frisco, Dillon and Silverthorne and there is everything that you could possibly need. A sweep around the ski resorts wouldn’t be complete without mentioning Winter Park and Mary Jane (the oldest continually operated ski area in Colorado – 68 years young!), and the numerous smaller resorts and day ski areas, such as Loveland Basin and Silverton Mountain that are great to explore. Enough skiing to keep you occupied for a lifetime!

Whatever your style and whatever your budget, Colorado has THE ski vacation that you have been dreaming about. The only problem is where, when, how much etc. This is where some local knowledge and advice is crucial. We all use the travel mega sites for the cheap airline and hotel deals, but when it comes to planning a ski vacation local knowledge and service reign supreme. Your local travel agent may be able to book a cruise, but a ski vacation? Location is key - a "ski-in ski-out" condo may be 150 yards from the lift – if that’s uphill it can be anything but ski in ski out! Especially if you have to carry the kids skis too!!! Facilities and amenities are also of vital importance, and talking to someone who has actually been there, or better still lives there, can make the difference between the perfect vacation and just another frustrating and expensive trip full of hassle and disappointment. The message here is clear – buyer beware. Remember, if you can’t talk to someone knowledgeable while you are planning your trip, then good luck talking to someone if you run into a problem.

As the old adage goes "The devil is in the details", and armed with a wealth of local knowledge and contacts the "niche" market specialists are worth their weight in gold. Not only can they generally match or often even better the "mega-site" deals they can make the difference between just another ski vacation and the vacation that you dreamed about.
